{"id":1726,"date":"2020-01-16T09:58:57","date_gmt":"2020-01-16T09:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/camps-international.localhost\/?p=1726"},"modified":"2024-09-18T03:42:44","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T02:42:44","slug":"social-enterprise-no-longer-just-a-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.campsinternational.com\/blog\/social-enterprise-no-longer-just-a-thing\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Enterprise: No longer just \u2018a thing\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"c-content-block content-block content-section \"\n        >\n    <div class=\"container user-content container--small\">\n        <p>Social Enterprise is \u2018a thing\u2019 now but it certainly wasn\u2019t when we kicked off in 2002.\u00a0 When we started talking to people about our concept, the most common question was, \u2018so are you a business or a charity?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen years feels like a lifetime for us as we have lived and breathed Camps since day one.\u00a0 In the big scheme of things, it\u2019s not so long though and it\u2019s amazing to see how far the social movement has come.\u00a0 Top universities are teaching social enterprise alongside the more recognised mainstream business courses and most importantly consumers want to engage with brands that stand for something.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding the story of a brand and being part of the journey, is now a big part of buying into any company that balances its need for profit with its commitment to causes.\u00a0 Balance is key, you must be serious about commercial success and equally committed to the good stuff.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to be different and look for fresh ways of living your life, then it\u2019s inevitable that you are going to go through a lot of trial and error. Failure truly breeds success,&#8217; if you have the stomach to keep getting back up and are ready to stay flexible and honest enough to learn and evolve from your mistakes.\u00a0 We have made some shockers over the years but there\u2019s no short cutting experience.<\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"c-large-image large-image content-section\"\n        >\n    <div class=\"large-image__container container container--medium user-content will-animate fadeInUp\"\n         data-behaviour=\"animate-when-visible\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"camps_international_social_enterprise_completed_project_in_borneo\"\n     class=\"attachment-full-width size-full-width\"\n     src=\"https:\/\/www.campsinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Camps_International_social_enterprise_completed_project_in_Borneo-1600x1200.jpg\"\n                    srcset=\"https:\/\/www.campsinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Camps_International_social_enterprise_completed_project_in_Borneo-400x300.jpg 360w,\n                    https:\/\/www.campsinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Camps_International_social_enterprise_completed_project_in_Borneo-800x600.jpg 768w,\n                    https:\/\/www.campsinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Camps_International_social_enterprise_completed_project_in_Borneo-1600x1200.jpg 1440w,\n                    https:\/\/www.campsinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Camps_International_social_enterprise_completed_project_in_Borneo-3200x2400.jpg 2000w\"\n        \/>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"c-content-block content-block content-section \"\n        >\n    <div class=\"container user-content container--small\">\n        <p>We always knew what we wanted to achieve with our camps.\u00a0 Improving the lives of the people that host us has always been paramount and once you make that call, you sign up to looking after the environment, the wildlife and everything that makes an impact to the communities.<\/p>\n<p>The tough bit was working out how to make it pay.\u00a0 If Camps isn\u2019t financially sound, then we achieve nothing.\u00a0 In the early days, we struggled to get this right and were constantly compromising the company to live up to our philanthropic commitments.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst some of the important decisions we made, there are some that stand out.\u00a0 We have always ignored the competition.\u00a0 We make a point of focusing on what we do and how we can make it better.\u00a0 It means that we charge a price that ensures the sustainability of everything we stand for, not influenced by the temptation of quick returns which invariably mean compromise.<\/p>\n<p>We also created The Camps Foundation, a fully registered charity that shares a unique relationship with the business.\u00a0 We use our company resources on a &#8216;not for profit&#8217; basis, our staff and network of committed ex-clients and friends, to raise funds. \u00a0Camps International covers all administrative costs, salaries, etc. Every Foundation dollar is spent on our projects. The Camps Foundation is our way of demonstrating our unwavering commitment to the wide range of projects and activities that have been developed by Camps International since 2002 and encompasses all our corporate social activities.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of this year we will reflect on some of the key moments in our story, the ones that have shaped us and on which our culture is built.\u00a0 If I am honest it is as much for us as anyone, but hope you enjoy sharing our journey.<\/p>\n\n
