It has the power to shape how someone is seen, both by you and by the people who may later view your images online.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s\u00a0why ethical photography matters. A simple photo, especially of someone in a rural or vulnerable setting, can unintentionally reinforce stereotypes, expose someone to risk, or make them feel uncomfortable. Photography should never take something from a person – it should\u00a0honour\u00a0them. What should you keep in mind when taking pictures of videos of people when traveling?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cFor me, the most important thing is always respect. Photography is never\u00a0<\/span>just about the<\/span>\u00a0image –\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0about the person in front of the lens and fundamentally what you are saying about them. What messages are you sending out to the world in relation to how you have portrayed that person or\u00a0<\/span>group.<\/span>\u00a0I try to be aware of the power dynamics at play, especially when travelling or working in communities that may be vulnerable. I remind myself that\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019m<\/span>\u00a0stepping into someone else\u2019s world, and I need to\u00a0<\/span>honour<\/span>\u00a0that space. Consent, dignity, and context are everything. If the interaction leaves someone feeling exposed, misunderstood, or objectified, then the image\u00a0<\/span>isn\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0worth taking.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

How should you approach people if you want to ask\u00a0<\/span>to photograph them<\/span>?<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cI take a moment to engage – to smile, to greet, to connect in whatever small way is\u00a0appropriate in\u00a0that setting. I make the camera\u00a0secondary. Once some trust is there, I explain clearly what\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0doing and why\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0love to photograph them. If language is a barrier, body language, warmth, and patience go a long way. And if there is any hesitation, I step back. It is so important to get consent and once you have that you can take a little time to make that connection seen in the portrait. It will transform the\u00a0image\u00a0and the viewer will feel it!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

Is this different in\u00a0<\/span>different cultures<\/span>?\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cAbsolutely. Cultural context matters enormously. Some communities are\u00a0very open\u00a0to being photographed; others may view it as intrusive or inappropriate. In some cultures, photographing elders or certain ceremonies is deeply disrespectful; in others, people are proud and happy to be documented.\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0learnt to do my homework, to ask local guides, and to stay observant. You can often sense the rules if\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0paying attention. Always check in before pulling your camera out.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

Are there moments when you should just put your camera (or phone) away?\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cImagery is incredibly powerful – a single photograph can travel far beyond its original context and tell a story that may not be yours to tell. With that power comes responsibility. There are times when I simply\u00a0<\/span>don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0know enough about a person\u2019s circumstances, history, or cultural context to\u00a0<\/span>represent<\/span>\u00a0them accurately or fairly. In those moments, choosing not to take\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0picture is the most ethical decision. Not every story needs to be captured, and certainly not every story is mine to share.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

What about posting pictures of people on social media?\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cEven if someone agrees to be photographed, that\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0automatically mean they understand or consent to being shared online. Before posting, I consider how the image might\u00a0impact\u00a0them – today and in the future. Could it misrepresent them? Could it expose them to risk or stigma? I share responsibly, with context, and in a way that preserves dignity. And when possible, I ask permission specifically for social media use.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When it comes to children,\u00a0the responsibility\u00a0is even greater. I never photograph or post images of children without clear, informed consent from a parent or guardian. Children cannot fully understand the long-term implications of having their image online, so\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0up to us as photographers to protect them. Even with parental consent,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0mindful of the type of image, the context, and whether sharing it could put them at risk or violate their privacy. Their safety and dignity always come first.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The communities we work with and the schools we support deserve the same respect we would expect ourselves. That means always gaining consent before taking photos, and taking the lead from school principles, teachers, and our camp and project managers, as integrity and dignity are central to how Camps operates.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

Lastly, can you give some tips for taking good portraits?\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cA strong portrait starts with connection – take a moment to speak with your subject, make them feel at ease, and build a bit of trust before lifting your camera.\u00a0<\/span>Don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0be afraid to get close; filling the frame with someone\u2019s face or upper body draws the viewer in and reveals real emotion. Be mindful of levels and angles too: shooting from slightly below can give someone strength and presence, while photographing from above can soften or diminish them. Small shifts in your position can completely change how a person is perceived, so move with intention.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n
